As an Accountability and Productivity coach, I’ve found that most people are struggling to follow through or take their first steps towards success, simply because they don’t know where they’re going!
Goals are nothing more than your desired destination or future state… let’s not over-complicate it!
Let’s also not get caught up in the “woo-woo” that is so prevalent in the self-help industry.
In 2006, a documentary was released called “The Secret,” designed to demonstrate the “law of attraction” hypothesis and the belief that everything one wants or needs can be satisfied by believing in an outcome, repeatedly thinking about it, and maintaining positive emotional states to “attract” the desired outcome from the cosmos.
Well, I call “B.S.” on that.
When self-help books were written prior to the 90s, they didn’t have the advanced understanding of the human brain that we have today. Neuroscience now teaches us about several phenomena that we previously thought were unexplainable or “secrets,” and my goal in the coming chapters is to help you understand a few of them so you buy into the goal- setting process and prime your mind.
I think that the reason people don’t set goals are either that they:
1. Don’t know how (the “gurus” make it harder than it needs to be so they have something to sell!)
2. Don’t know why (the constant misinformation clouds the importance)
3. They don’t have accountability or motivation to follow though
I believe that if you understand how your brain and body work, then you’ll be able to drive them better and get better performance.
The alternative is to give away your personal power and trust that there’s some “mystical cosmos energy” controlling whether you succeed or fail.
