A recent podcast reminded me about the neurological benefits of cold water. I’ve been doing it for so long now that I just take it for granted and if I skip it, it feels like I’ve left something behind. (Which is how a locked-in habit should feel)
Here are some of the neurological and health benefits:
- Boosts alertness: Cold water stimulates the vagus nerve, which is responsible for regulating the body’s “rest and digest” response. This helps to shift the body from a sleepy, relaxed state to a more alert and awake state, making it easier to tackle the day ahead.
- Increases circulation: Cold water causes blood vessels in the face to constrict and then dilate, promoting increased blood flow to the brain and other vital organs. This improved circulation can lead to enhanced cognitive performance and a more energized feeling overall.
- Reduces stress: Cold water has been shown to reduce cortisol levels, a hormone associated with stress and anxiety.
- Improves skin: Cold water can also help improve the health of your skin by reducing inflammation, tightening pores and promoting circulation, giving you a fresh, radiant appearance. (I’ve always said my youthful appearance was 10yrs in Sweden with no sun but maybe it’s my cold water routine?!)
It will also help with discipline and resilience and is a good stepping stone to cold or “contrast” showers, which will have similar yet more pronounced benefits.
Try splashing some cold water on your face a few times each morning and let me know how it goes; I am yet to meet anyone that doesn’t feel better after incorporating this into their morning routine!
